Dimitri Back with Authority

I was at Comerica on Friday heading down to my first row seats in left field (bought the tickets when the season first started for under face value…now the same tix go for $50 a piece on ebay)…as I heard them announce the starting lineup I thought I had just imagined that something was announced over the loud speakers.  Did they just say Dimitri Young?  Yep, the man who I called out and said "he will never appear in the english D again was batting 7th for the Tigers.  I had made that comment about a month ago on my other sports blog (petycash.com) when there were rumors about him and his personal troubles and admittance to the Betty Ford Clinic.  I was however extremly happy to hear him in the lineup and tried to get as many people as possible to stand up for him and cheer when he took his at bats.  He hasn’t performed as well as previous management had expected while signing him a large contract, but he is still a Tiger and has had some bright spots while wearing the Old English D.  Remember opening day 2005? I was on my couch thinking not only that the Tigers would make the postseason but that Dimitri really could hit 60 home runs this year… I mean what else can you think after someone hits 3 home runs in 1 game?  you wouldnt expect only 20 hr’s for the rest of the year!

Dimitri delivered when it counted, getting a 2-run hit in a 1-1 ballgame.  We all know that we need a left-handed bat, but is Dimitri the answer?  After seeing the first two games of the Oakland series you would say yes, but will history come back to bite us..again?  Dimitri has history of problems outside his personal life such as injuries.  The big question now is "Do we have what we need?..or do we need something else?"  This is why Dombrowski is the GM and I am not.  Whatever happens I will always be behind the Tigers.  I love Thames, Miner, and Monroe who have been tossed around in trade rumors.  I do not want to see them go and think since Dimitri is back we may be able to keep them.  But if a trade is to happen I am behind it (as long as we don’t give up the farm).

I am glad to see Dimitri contributing again and I wish him the best!

Atended Games

I live 2 and a half hours outside of Detroit but still try to make it to every game I possibly can.  I will be attending the first game of the A’s series tonight and have been to five games already.  Anyone travel over 5 hours for a Tigers game, or any other game this year?  I went 5 hours to see the Tigers/Milwaukee finale, in which they lost 4-3 but it was worth the trip.  I was privileged to see the saturday game of the Reds series in which Granderson hit a two out solo home run to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, and the Yankees game where we came back on Farnsworth in the 9th.

10 Impossible Trades That I’d Like to See

10.  Humberto Sanchez & Jordan Tata (det) for Lastings Miledge (NYM)

9.  Jason Giambi (NYY) for Barry Bonds (SF) One roider is as good as another righ?

8.  3 team trade; Dodgers get Frank Thomas & Mark Prior, A’s get Kerry Wood, and the Cubs get Nomar…again… and then they would all not play the rest of the year due to injury

7.  Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. (CIN) for Freddy Sanchez(2B), Ian Senll (SP) and Gonzalez (RHP)- Because Reds GM figures even if the pitcher isn’t that great where they are now doesn’t mean they won’t put up all star numbers in Cincinatti..Plus how cool would Dunn and Griffey look in those black, yellow and white jerseys?

6.  Albert Pujols (STL) for Andy Petite, Roy Oswalt, and Matt Lamb (HOU)- It would be sweet to see Pujols hit more homruns off the top of minute maid park.

5.  Sidney Ponson (NYY) for Jeff Weaver (STL) because this trade would make as much sense as both of these teams picking up these players in the first place!

4.  John Smoltz (ATL) and Andruw Jones (ATL) for David Ortiz (BOS)

3.  Richie Sexson, Raul Ibanez, and Ichiro (Sea) for Aramis Ramirez, Juan Pierre, Jaque Jones, Glendon Rusch, and Ryan Dempster (CHC) (Not a cubbies fan but what an outfield that would be…wait a minute..why isn’t Seattle good with that outfield???)

2.  A.J. Pierzinski (CHW), Paul Konerko (CHW) for Jake Peavy(SD) -So I wouldn’t have to see A.J. on television broadcasts in Michigan.

1.  3 Team trade; Phillies get; Craig Monroe, Jordan Tata, and Zach Miner.  Nationals get; Humberto Sanchez, Wilfredo Ledezma, Omar Infante and Nook Logan, Tigers get; Alfonso Soriano and Bobby Abreu.! And the Tigers Win the World Series!

Soriano or Abreu?

Who is a better fit for the Tigers?

Of course it is widely known and published that the Tigers want and need a left handed bat which Abreu is and Soriano is not.  But what kind of player are we looking for?

Soriano’s Line;

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB BA OBP SLG
Season 93 379 66 107 21 1 29 59 23 .282 .353 .573

Abreu’s Line;

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB BA OBP SLG
Season 89 302 60 86 22 2 8 60 19 .285 .439 .450

From the looks of this season’s performance most would have to choose Soriano but there are strings attached to both trade canidates.  In soriano’s case he will be a free agent at the end of the year and realisticly whoever is able to acquire him via trade cannot believe they will be able to sign him unless they are willing to give him a blockbuster contract.  For Abreu there is also great interest among many MLB teams including the Tigers.  Abreu is under contract but also a no-trade clause which means if he is to be traded he will want extra compensation (monetary of course).  Neither player will come cheap or be able to acquire easily because the asking prices will be high.  In either case the Tigers would most likely have to give up 3 prospects..or 2 and an everyday player (ex. Monroe).  I hope that we (Tigers) are able to acquire one of these players before the July 31st deadline but not by giving away our future (Humberto Sanchez, Cameron Maybin…etc.)

"Relax Tigers fans…the White Sox are Better"

My Response to Mr. Morrissey ‘RMorrissey@tribune.com’ :

Please consider the following statistics and comments when comparing the White Sox and Tigers.  First off I do agree that the White Sox are a better team but some of your comments are ridiculous.

Let’s look at the White Sox starters for a second. Over their last 10 starts here’s the E.R.A. for the Sox rotation and their decisions.. Garcia 6.11ERA (3-5), Buehrle 5.88ERA (4-5), Vasquez 5.89ERA (5-1), Garland 4.66 (5-1), and Contreras 4.76 (4-1)… Not one starter has an ERA less then 4.5 in the last 10 starts..and they have a better pitching staff then the Tigers? Let’s do the same comparison with the Tigers. Over their last 10 starts each here is the Detroit Tigers rotation stats (no particular order); Bonderman 2.73ERA (5-1), Miner (8 starts for the season) 3.30ERA (6-2), Robertson 3.26ERA (4-3),

Rogers

5.25ERA (4-1), and Verlander 2.56 ERA (6-1). Are you sure that the White Sox have a better pitching staff?

Buehrle: You said he is too good, and he will bounce back.  Have you looked at his second half numbers the last few years? And yes I know

Rogers

will fall apart as well but the rest of our rotation will still perform if not get better when Maroth returns.  And how could you insult one of the greatest catchers of our time if not the best? Do you realize that you said Ivan Rodriguez looks like he went through the wash one too many times, he’s so shrunken. But he can still play a little bit.” He is batting over .300 and is in better shape then ever.  Not only was he the starting

AL

catcher over 2 worthy opponents (varitek and Mauer) but he is in better shape and now capable of stealing bases.

People who say the Detroit Tigers will win the World Series are moving way too fast.  I would be very pleased with a playoff berth.  But by no means can you write us off or say that we will not be there at the end in the race for the AL Central.  The White Sox are better yes, but watch out for the Tigers…just don’t let your Chicago ego get in the way of being able to see that the Tigers do have a team capable of bringing some noise come October.
